What is a static IP address?

All computers that are connected to the internet are assigned a unique numerical address known as an Internet Protocol (IP) address.

A static IP address is a permanent address that is associated with a single computer. Having a static IP address is useful for people who, for instance, like to play online games as their device is instantly recognisable every time by the hosting server.

For home broadband, static IP addresses are rarer than dynamic IP addresses because they cost more to your ISP to offer them.
