Broadband type: ?

Standard broadband (ADSL) is the most basic, with low top speeds of 8-17Mbps. Speeds are often much lower at busy times of day, or if you live more than 1 mile from the exchange.

Fibre broadband (FTTC / Cable) uses a mix of fibre and copper wiring to deliver a faster, more reliable connection. Most advertise top speeds of 76Mbps, while Virgin's cable network can go to 350Mbps.

Fibre-to-home broadband (FTTP) offers the highest speeds by running full-fibre cables right into your property. FTTP is currently only available to a very limited number of households.

Average Speed: ?

Broadband speeds are now advertised using an average figure, representing the speed achieved by at least 50% of users at peak times.

You may not be able to receive the displayed speed on your connection. Actual speeds will vary by location, but each provider should be able to test your line and give you a more accurate indication of the speed you will achieve.

Gigabit broadband at over 1000Mbps is only available on 'full-fibre' or 'fibre-to-premises' connections. This connection type is currently only available to a very limited number of households in the UK. We recommend you search using your postcode to check availability.

You can choose how the price of each deal is displayed. All prices include line-rental.

Monthly cost is the total cost per month at the beginning of the contract. Some deals will revert to a higher price after an initial offer period.

First year cost is the estimated total cost of the first 12 months on this broadband deal. Comparing first year costs can sometimes give a more accurate idea of how much you will pay overall.

Everything you need to know about SSE

SSE is the name for Scottish and Southern Energy, a gas and electricity supplier who recently recently opened up its broadband offering to the general public.

SSE mainly operate in Scotland. Their energy customers can get access to the best tier of pricing, while non-SSE customers who take out broadband contracts have to pay £5 per month on top.

Non-SSE customers also have to pay a £50 installation fee which is added to the first month’s bill.

One point of difference is that all SSE broadband deals come with the promise of fixed monthly prices for three years.

All of SSE’s broadband deals come with unlimited downloads.

What can you get with SSE?

ADSL broadband

SSE offer ADSL broadband with speeds up to 17Mbps. Contracts are for 18 months and start at £21 a month.

SSE offer three kinds of calls packages to add to your broadband. Line Rental Only just gives you a phone line you can use but with no calls included. You’ll pay-as-you-go for any phone calls you make.

Anytime Landline adds £7 to your monthly bill and includes free calls to local and national numbers. Anytime Plus comes in at an extra £12 a month and includes free calls to UK mobiles.

Calls are not particularly cheap, even for those with one of the Anytime calls packages added on to their broadband. For Line Rental Only, local and national numbers cost 12p per minute. On the Anytime deals, local and national calls are free for the first 70 minutes but after that are charged at 12p per minute. Calls to mobiles are charged at 15p per minute for Line Rental Only and Anytime Landline, while calls to mobiles are free for the first 70 minutes on Anytime Plus, and 15p per minute after that.

Calls to 084, 087, 09 and 118 numbers are charged at 10p per minute across each call plan.

SSE do not sell mobile calls packages.

Fibre broadband

There are two kinds of fibre broadband where it is available: Unlimited Fibre, which is up to 38Mbps and Unlimited Fibre Plus, up to 76Mbps.

SEE don’t offer the option to bundle TV in with their broadband.

Business broadband

As of September 2017, there are no SSE business broadband deals on offer.

Why choose SSE?

If you are already an SSE customer and want one simple bill every month for all of your utilities then SSE are a decent option. Non-SSE customers may find the extra £5 a month, plus set-up fees, to be a little steep.
