What kind of a year have we really had in 2017? These days, it’s easier than ever to get a global glimpse into the topics that have been preying on our collective minds.

This month, researchers at Google have released the results of their annual Google Trends analysis.

By looking at popular search terms around the world, they are able to build up a fascinating picture of what people are thinking in every corner of the globe.

In a year of deadly natural disasters, royal engagements, and political upheaval, billions of people have been turning to Google to help them understand the world around them.

Top 10 searches worldwide

Celebrities, current events and sports all made an appearance on the list, with the top spot being taken by one of the strongest Atlantic storms in recent years.

Elsewhere, gadgets were on the minds of many searchers, with both of Apple’s newest iPhones and fidget spinners among the most popular terms.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the new royal fiancée was the most searched for term in the UK, while concern for our neighbours across the pond put Hurricane Irma into third place.

Elsewhere, homegrown disasters were very much on our minds, as Google users sought to find out more about the tragedies that tore Manchester and London apart.
