Connection type:

Connection types

Standard broadband (ADSL) is the most basic, with low top speeds of 8-17Mbps. Speeds are often much lower at busy times of day, or if you live more than 1 mile from the exchange.

Fibre broadband (FTTC / Cable) uses a mix of fibre and copper wiring to deliver a faster, more reliable connection. Most advertise top speeds of 76Mbps, while Virgin’s cable network can go to 350Mbps.

Fibre-to-home broadband (FTTP) offers the highest speeds by running full-fibre cables right into your property. FTTP is currently only available to a very limited number of households.

Enter your postcode to check availability.

Average speed:

Average speeds

Broadband speeds are now advertised using an average figure, representing the speed achieved by at least 50% of users at peak times.

You may not be able to receive the displayed speed on your connection. Actual speeds will vary by location, but each provider should be able to test your line and give you a more accurate indication of the speed you will achieve.

Gigabit broadband at over 1000Mbps is only available on ‘full-fibre’ or ‘fibre-to-premises’ connections. This connection type is currently only available to a very limited number of households in the UK. We recommend you search using your postcode to check availability.

Monthly data limit:

Data caps

Some providers offer deals with a set quantity of data per month. These deals are rare nowadays for home broadband, as with the advent of HD and 4K video and game streaming, many users will not wish to be limited.

However capped data deals can be cheaper than unlimited ones, so it may be worth considering if you’re not a big streamer.

Deal options

Contract length:

Contract terms

Broadband deals are now offered with a range of different contract lengths.

If you find a particularly cheap deal, it can be a good plan to lock it in for 18 months.

If instead you prefer flexibility, 1-month / no-contract broadband deals are fantastic choice, though they do tend to cost more up front.

Gifts & rewards:

Free Gifts / Rewards / Cashback

Some deals are offered with additional incentives such as cashback, gift cards, or trendy tech.

We don’t subtract the value of these extras when calculating the overall first-year costs of each deal – but you might wish to weigh up how much the gift is worth to you when making a decision.

New line needed:

New Line costs

If you don’t already have a working phone line at your property, most providers will require that you have one installed in order to receive broadband.

Most charge a one-off fee to cover the cost of installation – you can tick this box to add this cost to the deals show.

Phone options

Add a calls bundle:

Calls bundles

If you’re the type to spend hours chatting on the landline, you can make huge savings by bundling your calls in with your broadband.

Most providers offer a range of calls packages, so whether you’re after the odd evening gossip, or a marathon mid-day gabfest, you should be able to find something to suit.

Always check the provider’s terms – some numbers may not be included in your free call-time.

No landline:

No Landline

The vast majority of UK broadband comes through phone lines – so most deals require that you have a landline to your property, even if you don’t use it for the telephone.

However, some providers run their own cables to your premises, doing away with the need for a landline. Virgin’s cable network is the most widespread of these, available to around 60% of homes.

Some providers also allow you to get broadband but pay line-rental separately through another provider – these deals are labelled ‘separate line-rental required’.

TV options

Add a TV bundle:

TV bundles

For many of us, TV and broadband now go hand in hand. So why not bundle up and grab a deal that covers both?

‘Freeview +’ packages include the usual free-to-air channels available on freeview/freesat, usually with the addition of a small number of premium channels or tv-on-demand apps.

‘Premium’ packages are those that include a wider range of premium or subscription channels, often including specialist bundles for sport, cinema or kids tv.

Most TV packages also include some sort of set-top-box to allow recording/rewinding live broadcasts, but some such as NowTV are sold simply as subscriptions to stream online or through Smart TV devices.

TV channels filter:

TV channel filters

If there’s a particular channel you just can’t do without, you can use this filter to find deals which include it.

Please be aware that providers may change the channels available with any given package without prior warning. While we work hard to maintain up-to-date channel lists, you should always check availability with the provider before making any purchase.

Cost formats

You can choose how the price of each deal is displayed. All prices include line-rental.

Monthly cost is the total cost per month at the beginning of the contract. Some deals will revert to a higher price after an initial offer period.

First year cost is the estimated total cost of the first 12 months on this broadband deal. Comparing first year costs can sometimes give a more accurate idea of how much you will pay overall.

You can also sort your results by price or speed, high to low or low to high.

Sorting by First Year Cost from Lowest to Highest

This is the total combined cost of the deal over the first year of the contract – including any extras like postage and installation fees, or price rises after an introductory period.

We think this is the most accurate indicator of the overall cost of each offer.

Sorting by Monthly Cost from Lowest to Highest

This is the initial cost-per-month of the deal, but does not take into account any up-front fees or mid-contract price increases.

Everything you need to know about Sky

Owned by tech mogul billionaire Rupert Murdoch, Sky has been providing premium sports and entertainment since the early 1990s.

It launched broadband services in 2006 and now has over 6 million customers on its ADSL and fibre products in the UK.

Sky often have prepaid iTunes, Amazon and Mastercard gift cards as one-off offers, usually around £50 in value, so if you’re considering Sky broadband it’s worth waiting for a good extra sweetener to drop.

New customers will be required to verify their card details with an up front payment, usually £5. This payment will be credited to your account and taken off your first month’s bill.

Prices are aimed at mid-market rather than budget or value. Customers are strongly encouraged to add extras to their account, like TV packages.

From 1 March 2017, the standard monthly price of Sky Line Rental increased from £17.40 to £18.99. Line rental is now bundled in with the cost of broadband to give you one monthly price.

Sky has a VIP service for new and returning customers which launched in August 2017, offering free tickets, exclusive TV previews and regular free prize draws. Longer-serving customers get access to three further tiers of offers.

All new customers are eligible for the Silver VIP package.

What can you get?

ADSL broadband

Sky offers ADSL up to 17Mbps using the Openreach network.

Average UK download speeds for this product sit at around 11Mbps.

Sky say that during the first 10 days of setting up a new ADSL connection, download speeds will be limited and will fluctuate. New customers may see limited speeds of 4Mbps during this “settling down” period.

Calls

Sky Talk offers two main strands of calls packages. Inclusive Evening and Weekend Calls will add £4 to your monthly bill, while Anytime Calls costs an extra £8 a month.

All of Sky’s current call prices are here.

Fibre broadband

Sky fibre comes in three varieties: Sky Fibre, offering up to 38Mbps with a 25GB download limit, Sky Fibre Unlimited at the same speed but with unlimited data, and Sky Fibre Max, which gives you speeds up to 76Mbps and comes with unlimited data.

Sky was one of the first providers to promise a guaranteed minimum speed on its fastest Fibre Max plan. If you can’t receive a minimum 55Mbps download speed on Fibre Max, Sky will offer you the option to cancel with no early termination charges, or move you to one of its lower speed deals, Sky Fibre Unlimited Plus at 52Mbps or Sky Fibre Unlimited at 38Mbps.

Mobile

Sky offer 24 month contracts on the latest Android and iOS phones, as well as cheap SIM Only plans starting from £5 a month.

As of November 2017, there’s no way to add a Sky SIM to your broadband plan if you’re buying direct from the Sky website. According to customer services, this has to be done separately.

TV

Sky Q is Sky’s set-top box, offering three main types of bundles to get your Freeview and HD channels up and running. Each is an 18 month minimum contract.

Each of the Original, Variety and Box Sets bundles comes with the Sky Q 1TB box as standard. With this you can record up to three shows and watch a fourth and store up to 500 hours of standard definition TV. The more expensive 2TB Sky Q box doubles your live recording and storage ability.

You must return Sky Q equipment if you’re cancelling or switching away from Sky. If you don’t return the Sky Q Hub you’ll be charged £30, £50 for the Sky Q Mini, Sky Q 1TB is £100 and the 2TB version is a whopping £200. There’s a step-by-step guide here on how to return Sky equipment.

Even the lowest-priced TV add-on includes 270 channels.

Original Bundle – £20 a month
270+ channels including BBC One, BBC Two, BBC Four, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5, including HD versions and all the +1 catchup variants as well as Sky 1, CBeebies, CITV, Comedy Central, MTV, Dave, and international channels.

Variety Bundle – £32 a month
320+ channels including all the Freeview news and entertainment channels, Sky Atlantic (home of Game of Thrones) and premium kids channels like Nickelodeon, Nick Jr and the Disney Channel.

Box Sets Bundle – £38 a month
All of the above including 55 HD channels and 350 Sky box sets.

Why choose Sky?

Sky broadband is not the cheapest on the market but it really shines if you want to bundle broadband together with the latest entertainment TV and sports and there are few better options for premium coverage.
