Broadband options

Connection type:

Connection types

Standard broadband (ADSL) is the most basic, with low top speeds of 8-17Mbps. Speeds are often much lower at busy times of day, or if you live more than 1 mile from the exchange.

Fibre broadband (FTTC / Cable) uses a mix of fibre and copper wiring to deliver a faster, more reliable connection. Most advertise top speeds of 76Mbps, while Virgin’s cable network can go to 350Mbps.

Fibre-to-home broadband (FTTP) offers the highest speeds by running full-fibre cables right into your property. FTTP is currently only available to a very limited number of households.

Enter your postcode to check availability.

Average speed:

Average speeds

Broadband speeds are now advertised using an average figure, representing the speed achieved by at least 50% of users at peak times.

You may not be able to receive the displayed speed on your connection. Actual speeds will vary by location, but each provider should be able to test your line and give you a more accurate indication of the speed you will achieve.

Gigabit broadband at over 1000Mbps is only available on ‘full-fibre’ or ‘fibre-to-premises’ connections. This connection type is currently only available to a very limited number of households in the UK. We recommend you search using your postcode to check availability.

Monthly data limit:

Data caps

Some providers offer deals with a set quantity of data per month. These deals are rare nowadays for home broadband, as with the advent of HD and 4K video and game streaming, many users will not wish to be limited.

However capped data deals can be cheaper than unlimited ones, so it may be worth considering if you’re not a big streamer.

Deal options

Contract length:

Contract terms

Broadband deals are now offered with a range of different contract lengths.

If you find a particularly cheap deal, it can be a good plan to lock it in for 18 months.

If instead you prefer flexibility, 1-month / no-contract broadband deals are fantastic choice, though they do tend to cost more up front.

Gifts & rewards:

Free Gifts / Rewards / Cashback

Some deals are offered with additional incentives such as cashback, gift cards, or trendy tech.

We don’t subtract the value of these extras when calculating the overall first-year costs of each deal – but you might wish to weigh up how much the gift is worth to you when making a decision.

New line needed:

New Line costs

If you don’t already have a working phone line at your property, most providers will require that you have one installed in order to receive broadband.

Most charge a one-off fee to cover the cost of installation – you can tick this box to add this cost to the deals show.

Phone options

Add a calls bundle:

Calls bundles

If you’re the type to spend hours chatting on the landline, you can make huge savings by bundling your calls in with your broadband.

Most providers offer a range of calls packages, so whether you’re after the odd evening gossip, or a marathon mid-day gabfest, you should be able to find something to suit.

Always check the provider’s terms – some numbers may not be included in your free call-time.

No landline:

No Landline

The vast majority of UK broadband comes through phone lines – so most deals require that you have a landline to your property, even if you don’t use it for the telephone.

However, some providers run their own cables to your premises, doing away with the need for a landline. Virgin’s cable network is the most widespread of these, available to around 60% of homes.

Some providers also allow you to get broadband but pay line-rental separately through another provider – these deals are labelled ‘separate line-rental required’.

TV options

Add a TV bundle:

TV bundles

For many of us, TV and broadband now go hand in hand. So why not bundle up and grab a deal that covers both?

‘Freeview +’ packages include the usual free-to-air channels available on freeview/freesat, usually with the addition of a small number of premium channels or tv-on-demand apps.

‘Premium’ packages are those that include a wider range of premium or subscription channels, often including specialist bundles for sport, cinema or kids tv.

Most TV packages also include some sort of set-top-box to allow recording/rewinding live broadcasts, but some such as NowTV are sold simply as subscriptions to stream online or through Smart TV devices.

TV channels filter:

TV channel filters

If there’s a particular channel you just can’t do without, you can use this filter to find deals which include it.

Please be aware that providers may change the channels available with any given package without prior warning. While we work hard to maintain up-to-date channel lists, you should always check availability with the provider before making any purchase.

Cost formats

You can choose how the price of each deal is displayed. All prices include line-rental.

Monthly cost is the total cost per month at the beginning of the contract. Some deals will revert to a higher price after an initial offer period.

First year cost is the estimated total cost of the first 12 months on this broadband deal. Comparing first year costs can sometimes give a more accurate idea of how much you will pay overall.

You can also sort your results by price or speed, high to low or low to high.

Sorting by First Year Cost from Lowest to Highest

This is the total combined cost of the deal over the first year of the contract – including any extras like postage and installation fees, or price rises after an introductory period.

We think this is the most accurate indicator of the overall cost of each offer.

Sorting by Monthly Cost from Lowest to Highest

This is the initial cost-per-month of the deal, but does not take into account any up-front fees or mid-contract price increases.

You can reverse the order by clicking the arrows next to the dropdown list.

Sorting by Average Broadband Speed from Lowest to Highest

This is the speed each provider has reported that at least 50% of their customers can expect at peak times.

You can reverse the order by clicking the arrows next to the dropdown list.

Sorting by Data Limit from Lowest to Highest

This is the amount of download data included each month. If your data runs out mid-month you will have to pay more to keep using your mobile broadband.

Everything you need to know about TalkTalk

TalkTalk started life in Leeds in 2003 as a subsidiary of Carphone Warehouse. In 2010 it split away and became its own company.

Providing broadband, calls, TV and mobile services, TalkTalk is now headquartered in London.

ADSL broadband

TalkTalk’s ADSL broadband with maximum speeds of 17Mbps is aimed at the value end of the market.

Calls

Adding Anytime Calls to your broadband bundle will cost £7.50 a month. A full list of TalkTalk phone call prices is here.

Mobile

TalkTalk runs a mobile virtual network selling SIM Only plans. It uses the Vodafone network for voice calls and 3G data. As of November 2017 TalkTalk are not selling any new contracts and word on the street is that it will sell off its mobile arm to rivals O2 or Three.

TV

TalkTalk has its own on-demand TV services using the Youview and Youview+ Freeview HD box.

There are two packages: TalkTalk TV and TalkTalk TV Plus.

The basic package gives you the standard Youview Freeview box with which you can pause and rewind up to 30 minutes of live TV.

You get 80 Freeview channels with 15 in HD.

The more pricey TV Plus plan gets you the upgraded Youview+ box, which allows you to pause and record 90 hours of HD content, as well as rewinding up to two hours of live TV.

You’re looking at around 150 channels in total, including premium entertainment like MTV, Sky One, Sky Two and Sky Living, as well as UK Gold and Comedy Central.

Netflix is available as an app through Youview.

One-month TV Boosts are also available. These are channel collections under the likes of Entertainment, Kids or Sports so you can try out Sky Sports for a month, or Sky Cinema, or Nickelodeon, Boomerang and Disney Channel.

Fibre broadband

TalkTalk sells the same two kinds of fibre as every other provider using Openreach: up to 38Mbps and up to 76Mbps. These, like TalkTalk’s ADSL, are aimed towards the budget-conscious customer.

Why choose TalkTalk?

If price is the single biggest factor in picking your next broadband provider then TalkTalk might work for you. Their TV Boosts offer a cheaper way to get Sky Sports or Sky Cinema on one-month contracts.
