What does the arrival of 8Gbps home broadband mean for the UK?
The recent unveiling of 8Gbps home broadband is currently a solution in search of a problem.
There’s a common assumption that any new technology will be superior to the ones it promises to replace.
Yet history demonstrates this is often completely untrue.
The Minidisc was released a decade after the CD, yet it was far too costly with limited availability, and BSB offered fewer channels than Sky TV despite being a newer market entrant.
The news that EE has unveiled home broadband capable of achieving download speeds of eight gigabits per second therefore demands caution.
While technological breakthroughs of this magnitude are always welcome, the arrival of 8Gbps home broadband isn’t going to lead to significant changes across our industry.
Here’s why.

The staggering download speeds touted by EE in a press release earlier this month are currently limited to a small corner of England, around Guildford and Woking.
A full fibre network has been rolled out here, using technology known as XGS-PON.
Capable of speeds over 200 times quicker than today’s superfast broadband, EE’s Advanced Full Fibre reportedly caters to “the connected experiences of tomorrow.”
EE believe the 20 per cent growth in global web traffic in 2025, and rising consumer expectations of uninterrupted service provision, may one day make such capacities necessary.
It’s true that the average British home has an increasing number of web-enabled devices sending and receiving data.
At the same time, file quality is increasing as standard definition streams give way to HD content. This in turn is being supplanted by 4K files, while 8K looms on the horizon.
Each of these file types is four times larger than its predecessor, and our ongoing obsession with social media content and video streaming means we’re utilising more bandwidth than ever.
EE’s Advanced Full Fibre is available at two speeds – 2.3Gbps (which still outperforms almost any other consumer service in the UK) or 8Gbps.
The latter results in a connection capable of supporting almost two hundred connections simultaneously, without overloading the broadband router.
So will this change the home broadband industry?
In truth, it probably won’t.
Just as history is littered with failed innovations (many of them Facebook-related), it also offers salutary tales of overnight sensations that took a long time to germinate.
EE is only able to offer these packages because parent company BT’s Openreach offshoot is futureproofing local cabling by installing connectivity far beyond modern needs.
Even a 1Gbps line arguably provides more bandwidth than anyone really needs in 2026, especially since the tide seems to be finally turning on social media usage.
A line eight times faster than 1Gbps may not be fully taxed in the next decade, and other full fibre broadband networks are unlikely to accelerate their own existing upgrade programmes.
Beyond bragging rights down the pub, it’s impossible to imagine any household requiring even 2.3Gbps coverage in the 2020s, unless an unforeseen new technology emerges.
What the Guildford rollout has done is give EE some free publicity, an industry first among major ISPs, and an opportunity to charge premium fees to households which sign up.
But to return to our earlier statistics, how many homes have two hundred smart devices, and how many families need to stream 80 different 8K streams at once?
That’s what it would take to max out an 8Gbps home broadband connection, which is why this is little more than a good news story for one of our industry’s big hitters.
